No More Hiding - What is it all about?

Welcome to the new look of this podcast. The biggest change is not only the name but the topics that we will be discussing. And I wanted to share with you what you can expect from tuning in to the show.

No More Hiding is exactly that. It’s a show to empower women to step into their own spotlight. Use their voice. Be seen and be heard. And get comfortable with the uncomfortable.

I am Gemma Stow, your self promotion expert, coach and workshop facilitator.

Too often I have worked with women who have been holding back from showing off their talents. Sometimes they know it. Sometimes they don’t.

I’ve also been that woman too. It wasn’t that long ago that I realised I had been hiding. I’m a proud introvert yet this resulted in me finding ways to avoid what I knew I should have been doing. Hiding in different ways but I knew I was made for more.

By holding back women are missing out on important opportunities that could really skyrocket their careers.

One of the biggest challenges that comes up for women is the idea of self promotion. The research tells us that there is a gender gap when it comes to women owning their expertise and showcasing it to those that matter.

I hear things like

 “It feels uncomfortable”

“I feel like a big show off”

“I hate being the centre of attention”

“I don’t want others to think I love myself”

Time and time again women are overlooked because they don’t share their opinions and ideas in meetings. They miss out on the promotion because they undervalue themselves. And they don’t get to that next level because they aren’t visible enough.

They continue to work really hard and hope and pray that they will get noticed. They want to be recognised and rewarded for the effort and value they bring to the table. Yet it’s not happening. And the gap is still there.

I see this as a dual responsibility. Yes companies have to look after their employees. Make sure that the environment is one in which is inclusive and they can thrive. But there’s also a part that women have to play.

The increasing  pressure on companies with the gender gap statistics on display is something that can be addressed with self promotion.

Supporting women to start showcasing their talents. Through coaching, mentoring, training and development but most of all redefining what self promotion means. Companies need women to step up too.

It’s definitely not about being the loudest in the room although we all know some who think it is. But it’s more about women figuring out what their natural strengths are combined with their values and passions.

Knowing that what you have to offer is way more than you think.

Women often undervalue their expertise and talk themselves out of saying yes to new opportunities. Convincing themselves they need more skills, experience or even qualifications.  It’s also not necessarily connected to confidence. It’s about self belief and feeling enough and often those societal norms and ways we are expected to behave can get in the way.

This show is all about giving you permission , should you need it, to go out there and show the world what you’ve got. No more undervaluing. No more passing up the praise and definitely no more hiding.

I share my thoughts and learnings around this subject and interview some incredible guests from HR professionals to business owners to equality and inclusion leaders and those in education.

Self promotion is not a dirty word and it’s time we all started waving our flags.

Let me know how much you enjoy the show by leaving a quick review. It really does mean that even more people can find the show and benefit from the conversations too.

And if you know you are avoiding self promotion or you are in a position to support your female colleagues to embrace it, then why not book a chat with me, I come alive when I'm helping women step forward and the results show that they come alive too.  The link is below.
